In-Classroom Activities
Try them in your classroom or at home

 Urban Adventure Squad partnered with classroom teachers at Stokes School in grades kindergarten through five to connect our grant work with grade-level curricula.
​Students learned about buried streams, stormwater runoff, and erosion.

​After their in-classroom activities, which provided essential context for their field trips, students were able to answer questions such as:
​
  • How are waterways in D.C. connected?
  • Why is it important to daylight streams?
  • What happens to the trash we see in our streets?

Trash Timeline

Students worked together to create hypotheses about how long different items, like glass, plastic, and aluminum, take to decompose.

Impervious vs. Pervious Surfaces

Through a hands-on activity, students demonstrated how water flows over pervious and impervious surfaces, mimicking the flow of stormwater runoff in Washington, D.C.

Making a Watershed Simulation

A watershed is all the land and waterways in a certain area. Students examined, through a simulation and discussion, how pollutants can travel through the watershed and end up in our rivers and oceans. To simulate a watershed, and the effects of rain on the watershed, we used paper, markers, and small particles, like seasoning and sprinkles.
