It's the Squad Waterway Cleanup!
Join Urban Adventure Squad THIS SUNDAY, Nov. 3, 2:00-4:00 pm, at 14th and Gallatin Streets, NE, for a free, educational, physically active Squad event. Together, we'll clear trash from a local waterway on National Park Service land that feeds into the Anacostia River.
This event is free and open to the public, and is for all ages. All children (anyone under 18) must be accompanied and supervised by an adult; this is not a dropoff event. If you have limited mobility and/or would like to bring small children, please read below for details on accessibility.
We strongly encourage individuals who love an outdoor adventure, as well as families with upper elementary, middle school, and high school students to join us. We'll all learn, observe, and repair our local environment together. There will be exciting opportunities to reach and remove trash that is polluting our waterways, and which has been ignored for too long!
Students can earn SSL/community service hours; please bring your forms to be signed.
To learn more about our waterways work, and about local and national efforts to preserve and protect waterways, visit our Hidden Waterways resources area.
Your participation means so much--every piece of trash we pick up is one more than stays out of the water and disrupts habitat for local wildlife. It's going to be a WONDERFUL day. Please join us!
MEET SPOT: We'll meet at the "Fort Circle Parks" sign at the corner of 14th and Gallatin streets, NE. Here is a link to the GPS location. Street parking is available. The location is about two blocks from the North Michigan Park Recreation Center.
EVENT SCHEDULE: The event begins at 2:00 with a mini-training and concludes at 4:00. You do not need to stay the whole time, but please plan to arrive on time for the training.
WHAT TO BRING:
A refillable bottle of water. We will have refillable bottles to borrow or keep, and water available for refills; please refrain from bringing disposable water bottles if possible.
We are in need of trash grabber tools. If you are attending and can bring some, please email [email protected].
WHAT TO WEAR:
--Boots that are waterproof or water-resistant, if you have them.
--Long pants, long-sleeved shirt, and socks; this is an area of high grass and thorny bushes, so we'll want to protect our legs and arms.
Squad hiking pants collection: The Squad is collecting new and gently used hiking pants to share. Hiking pants are quick drying, often have a zip-off feature that converts them to shorts, and protect our legs on hikes in the woods. They're not always cheap, and children can outgrow them quickly. If you have some in youth sizes, please bring them. We'll share what we have with anyone that needs a pair to take home! All donated hiking pants (we don't have storage to accept any other kind at this time) must be clean and in good condition.
WEATHER: If there is a significant rain event within 48 hours before our cleanup, we'll need to modify our event to stay away from the waterway, but we will clean up the neighborhood and green space. We comply with these rules from our Adopt-A-Stream Training, given by the D.C. Department of Energy and Environment, Rock Creek Conservancy, and the Alice Ferguson Foundation.
For changes due to weather, please check back on this page. We will also communicate through our newsletter, the UAS Update, which you can subscribe to here, our Facebook (@UrbanAdvSquad), and our Twitter (@UrbanAdvSquad).
ACCESS AND MOBILITY: Access to the waterway is very limited, and requires a semi-steep, somewhat slippery, but very short climb down a hill. Once at the waterway, there will be various areas that need our help. Some will only be accessible to people with tall, waterproof boots, and others will be accessible to everyone who is able to make it to the waterway.
Attendees with limited mobility or with small children in tow who cannot climb down to the waterway will have opportunities to clean areas on dry land and in the woods. In our training, we will cover safety and what not to pick up.
COST: This is a totally free event. If you would like to support the Squad with a donation that allows us to continue to offer free events like this one, you can Make a Donation to Urban Adventure Squad.
