Middle Schoolers Investigate
Environmental Justice in D.C.

During school-year 2022-23, Urban Adventure Squad was honored to receive a Community Stormwater Solutions Grant from the DC Department of Energy and Environment.

The funds supported our project with Wheatley Education Campus, a Title 1 Washington, D.C. public school in Trinidad, a historically underserved neighborhood of D.C.'s Ward 5.

During this project, we worked with 60 middle schoolers on a classroom-based, environmental justice project that moves watershed education into the English Language Arts curriculum.

Through creative writing, outdoor science experiments, and neighborhood investigations, students

1) explored the historical and current challenges to the Anacostia River

2) learned about the significance of stormwater runoff mitigation

3) practiced environmental advocacy by creating written projects.

Students from Wheatley Education Campus:

participated in monthly outdoor watershed explorations during the school day,

conducted stormwater runoff investigations on and near school grounds, and, for their final outdoor adventure of the year,

took the H St. Streetcar to Kingman and Heritage Islands on the Anacostia River, where they went kayaking and fishing with Living Classrooms, and went birding with Urban Adventure Squad.

Outdoor Learning is for all!
