UAS Middle School
Leadership Program

UAS Middle School Leadership Program

Urban Adventure Squad offers leadership opportunities for young people in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Middle school students have year-round opportunities to lead, teach, and learn new skills. Our Middle School Leaders assist UAS staff by helping to lead hikes and circle discussions, working with small groups of younger children on science, art, and design projects, joining our staff meetings, distributing snacks, helping with dropoff and pickup, making presentations, and much more.

Based on feedback from middle school students, educators, and administrators, Urban Adventure Squad is investing additional resources to offer Middle School Leaders memorable, enriching experiences when they are with us. We expect that future opportunities will include special field trips and long-term projects, and are exploring partnerships with park conservation groups, arts and music organizations, and local environmental groups.

During UAS Summer 2020, we hope to enroll at least 3-4 middle schoolers for each weeklong session. Early enrollment means that we can identify special opportunities and activities for students in grades 6-8 during the course of our research and preparation for the summer. We're not a formulaic program--each week is based on our DC location and the theme--and we use the early months of 2020 to prepare content and field trips, and to invite guest educators and experts to visit the Squad.

Early enrollment of middle schoolers means that we can focus our efforts on the best possible mentoring and educational opportunities for them during the course of our program.
