If, after reading this, you or your child have any questions or are worried about any aspect of in-person programming during a pandemic, please contact us at [email protected].
OUTDOOR MASKS ARE OPTIONAL.
Effective immediately, the Squad is making masks optional--outdoors only--for programs that we host. We will remain fully masked during the indoor portions of our programs, with no exceptions. We request that all participants wear a KN95 or surgical mask for all indoor time. The Squad will provide these to any child who doesn’t have them. We expect that we will continue to remain masked indoors through the summer, and that, unless local and state guidance on outdoor masking changes, we will continue to make masks optional when we are outdoors. If, due to this policy change, you no longer would like your child to attend the program, please let us know so that we can offer a spot to a child on the waitlist.

PROGRAM CONTENT
Junior Ranger Adventure Squad is a creative partnership between Urban Adventure Squad and Friends of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens with the goal to create meaningful connections to local National Parks and foster a lifelong love of environmental stewardship in students here in Washington, DC. Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, a historic National Park Service site located along the Anacostia River, is where we will spend our days hiking, exploring, learning, picnicking, and playing.
This program is titled, 'Exploring Local Wildlife and Making Artistic Connections.'
Students will use binoculars, handheld microscopes, and field guides to learn about the flora and fauna of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. Through drawing, poetry, origami, and paracord bracelets, plus a visit from the Washington Ballet, students will make artistic connections to the natural world throughout the week.

HOW TO BE PREPARED FOR ADVENTURE:
- PACK A LUNCH and WATER BOTTLE. Morning and afternoon snacks will be provided each day, but your child should bring their own lunch and water bottle. We do not plan to eat snacks or lunch indoors unless bad weather means that we have no safe or dry place to eat. We will be hiking around the neighborhood and students will carry their backpacks and lunches--be sure your Squad member is prepared but not overburdened with extra items in their bags.
- CHECK THE WEATHER. April weather is unpredictable, so we recommend checking the weather each day and sending your Squad member prepared with layers to stay warm on cold days or with umbrellas and rain boots if it's wet. When Squad members are dressed comfortably for outdoor neighborhood adventures, then ALL weather can be great weather. Thanks to generous donors who purchase items from our Amazon wish list, our educators will have extra hats, gloves, and hand warmers, as well as ponchos and umbrellas for anyone who needs them.
- CONDUCT TICK CHECKS EACH EVENING. Tick checks are a regular part of spending time outdoors when temperatures are above freezing. Please conduct a tick check on your student after each day with Urban Adventure Squad. You can find more information about tick safety here: www.urbanadventuresquad.org/tickprotocol
- PREFERRED PAIRINGS. If your child has a friend or sibling they'd like to be grouped with, please reply to this email so we can be sure to place them in the same group.
- ALLERGY PROTOCOL. If your child has an allergy, please reply to this email with your child's allergy protocol. UAS educators carry Benadryl but will only administer it if we see the signs and symptoms you indicate in your allergy protocol. If a child with no known allergies exhibits a mild to moderate allergic reaction, we will call you to get permission to administer Benadryl. If a child with no known allergies exhibits a severe allergic reaction, we will call 911 and then call you.
